Application
Product application:
- Purpose: Provide a Class A2-S1, D0 flame-retardant intumescent barrier to protect building materials from fire spread and heat damage.
- Substrates: Suitable for spray foam insulation, PIR insulation, timber, steel, concrete, brickwork, and other porous building surfaces.
- Typical areas of use:
- Fire protection over internal spray foam and PIR insulation.
- Timber frame constructions and structural timber components.
- Fire-protective coating for steel, concrete, and brick elements.
- Retrofit projects requiring enhanced fire performance.
Preparation:
- Ensure surfaces are clean, dry, and free from dust, grease, and loose material.
- Fill any gaps or cracks with compatible filler.
- Prime only where required, as per Fred Fire Paint application guidance.
Application method:
- Mix thoroughly before use.
- Apply by airless spray (preferred), roller, or brush.
- Minimum two coats for full fire performance, following specified coverage rates.
- Allow each coat to dry before applying the next.
Conditions:
- Ambient and substrate temperature: Minimum +5°C during application and curing.
- Protect from moisture and frost until fully cured.
Clean-up:
- Wash tools and equipment with water immediately after use.
Description
FRED is a Class A2-S1, D0 intumescent flame retardant coating engineered to protect spray foam insulation, PIR insulation, timber, steel, concrete, and brickwork from fire spread. Independently fire-tested, FRED forms a seamless intumescent barrier that expands under heat to slow flame spread, reduce smoke generation, and safeguard structural integrity.
Apply by brush, roller, or airless spray to clean, dry substrates. FRED is typically applied without primer, making it suitable for retrofit and new-build projects alike. Suitable for residential, commercial, and industrial applications where fire-rated protection of insulation and structural elements is required.
Coverage varies by substrate: approx. 100-120 sq ft per gallon on smooth surfaces. Multiple coats may be required to achieve specified dry film thickness for Class A2 performance.
